Dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) is widely used as a chemical intermediate and as a food additive in products such as onion, garlic, cheese, meats, soups, savory flavors, and fruit flavors.
In the petroleum industry, it functions as a sulfiding agent and can replace methyl mercaptan as a jet fuel additive. It is also applied in the synthesis of 4-(methylthio)phenol and in alpha-substitution reactions of 2-methylfuran-acrolein for food production.
