Product Description of Methylene Blue CAS# 61-73-4

Methylene blue (MB) is a reducing agent that is highly soluble in water and can readily cross cell membranes. It has minimal toxic side effects and is an approved clinical drug. Since its introduction to the biological field in the 19th century, methylene blue has been widely applied as a dye in neuroanatomy and bacteriology. In biochemical research, it serves as an indicator of redox reactions. Clinically, methylene blue is used as an antidote for methemoglobinemia caused by nitrite and other toxins, and it is also applied in the treatment of cyanide poisoning and ifosfamide-induced encephalopathy.

Product Application of Methylene Blue CAS# 61-73-4

Methylene blue is a non-toxic dye that exists in a blue oxidized form and a colorless reduced form. When staining live yeast cells, the cells’ strong metabolic activity reduces methylene blue from blue to colorless, while weakly metabolizing or dead cells lack reducing ability and are stained blue or light blue. This property allows for observation of yeast cell morphology and the distinction between live and dead cells.

Additionally, methylene blue is widely used for dyeing linen, silk fabrics, paper, bamboo, and wood, and in the production of inks and lakes. It is also suitable for staining biological and bacterial tissues. By mixing with basic purple 5BN and yellow dextrin in a ratio of 78:13:9, it can produce basic royal blue, expanding its applications in coloring and textile industries.
