Product Application of 1,3-Butanediol (CAS#107-88-0)
1,3-Butanediol is characterized by diol reactivity, odorlessness, low toxicity, and good water solubility. Its main applications include:
Raw Material for Polyester and Alkyd Resins – Used in the production of unsaturated polyesters, either alone or mixed with ethylene glycol, providing excellent water resistance, flexibility, and impact strength.
Raw Material for Plasticizers – When combined with dibasic acids (e.g., adipic acid) to form polyester plasticizers, it offers low volatility, migration resistance, and excellent resistance to soap water, solvents, and oils.
Raw Material for Polyurethane Coatings – As a building block for saturated polyester in polyurethane coatings, it improves water resistance in unpainted surfaces, outperforming other diols.
Wetting Agent, Softener, and Solvent – Exhibits strong moisture retention and low toxicity. Its esters can be used as wetting and softening agents in cigarettes, celluloid, vinylon films, paper, and fibers. Additionally, it serves as a solvent in fine chemical formulations such as lotions, ointments, creams, and toothpastes, and acts as an intermediate in pharmaceuticals and dyes.
