Product Description of Direct Triiron Tetraoxide (CAS #1317-61-9)
Triiron tetroxide can be obtained from its natural mineral source, magnetite. In laboratory settings, it can be synthesized by adding a sodium hydroxide solution to an aqueous 1:2 molar mixture of ferrous and ferric salts (1 mol FeCl₂ + 2 mol FeCl₃). The resulting black hydroxide precipitate dehydrates upon heating to form triiron tetroxide:
Fe²⁺(aq) + 2Fe³⁺(aq) + 8OH⁻(aq) → Fe₃(OH)₈(s)
Fe₃(OH)₈(s) → Fe₃O₄(s) + 4H₂O(g)
Triiron tetroxide can also be produced through partial oxidation of iron or iron(II) sulfate by heating under limited air supply. Another method involves reacting iron metal with steam at elevated temperatures.
